A rematch between Turkey and the United States took
place Tuesday. After losing it's first exhibition game vs. Italy,
the team won it's fifth straight pre-Olympic game.
The game was played even after learning that bombs had exploded at two
tourist hotels just a few miles from team USA's hotel.
Co-captains Allen Iverson and Tim Duncan helped team USA overcome Turkey's
national team 80-68 to close out the exhibition games and win it's second
in a row over Turkey.
Two-time NBA MVP Tim Duncan carried the team with 25 points and 11
rebounds. Duncan was 12-14 from the field. Iverson chipped in with
13 points, five assists, and three steals. Richard Jefferson (11
points) and Shawn Marion (10 points) each added double-digit points for
the U.S. Cavs star LeBron James collected 4 points and 5 boards in
15 minutes of action. Stephon Marbury handed out seven assists.
The three-point shot wasn't effective enough for Turkey, unlike Sunday
when it brought them within three late in the fourth quarter. Turkey
went just 11-29 behind the arc. Even with the addition of Hedu Turkoglu,
out Sunday with a broken nose, Turkey couldn't overcome Duncan and the
rest of team USA.
"Our style of play is to not shoot outside shots when we can throw
the ball inside to the best player (Tim Duncan) in the world. And, once we
establish Tim Duncan, he's going to make everybody else better," said
Larry Brown, USA and Detroit Pistons head coach. "I'm sure we are
going to see a lot of zone and because of that, we have to defend better
than we did tonight so we can get out on the break.
Shooting a robust 73.3 percent from the field in the first quarter, team
USA only held a slim 23-21 advantage. Duncan had 13 points in the
first quarter alone. But the U.S. could not keep Turkey from staying
in the game. Turkey's Ibrahim Kutluay made 5-of-6 shots, including 3-of-4
from 3-point land, to account for 14 points.
The second quarter saw Turkey overtake U.S.A. and lead by four at 31-27
with 4:24 left in the half. Then team USA came back. Marion
made a bucket, James made two-free throws, and Jefferson hit consecutive
shots to cap an 8-0 run and give the U.S. a 35-31 lead. Kutluay nailed a
three-pointer just before the half ended to pull Turkey within one point
at 37-36 going into halftime.
The U.S. used a 10-0 spurt that extended into the fourth quarter to break
a 53-53 tie.
Turkey brought the score to 67-60 with 7:01 to play but Marion added four
points to highlighting an U.S. 8-0 run. That jumped the Americans
lead to 75-60 with 3:58 to go and they never looked back.
"These two games were great for us," Duncan said. "We're a
much better team because of it. The fans were very much into it here and
it was great for us...that experience was great for us. Especially the
last one ... and really this game too, where it was so close for three to
three and a half quarters. We got to feel that pressure of the crowd being
on top of us and rooting against us ... and getting some calls that didn't
go our way but playing through it."
The U.S. shot a hot 59.3 percent from the field. Turkey managed to shoot
just 37.3 percent from the floor.
